The plant engineering interview: floor walk, problem case and the questions they ask

Questions you’ll almost certainly get
- Walk me through a problem you solved on the floor. What was the root cause and how did you prove it?
- Tell me about a time a fix didn’t stick. What did you change?
- How do you get operators to adopt a new process?
- How do you decide between a quick containment and a permanent fix?
- Which quality tools have you used for real (PFMEA, SPC, 8D, DOE)?
- What would your first 90 days here look like?
The floor walk
- 1The constraint: where WIP piles up
- 2Scrap and rework bins
- 3Changeover / production board
- 4Andon lights and response
They’re watching what you notice. Ask about the constraint, the scrap bins, the changeover board and the andon. Say one improvement idea out loud, framed as a question, not a criticism.
The problem case
You’ll often get a scenario (“scrap on line 3 doubled last week”). Structure it: contain, define, measure, find the root cause, fix, verify, standardize. Ask for data before you guess.
Before any of this, talk to someone on the team. They’ll tell you what the manager is fighting right now. That’s the unfair advantage.
