Lean / CI
The Lean / CI career path: from kaizen events to OpEx director
Belts, roles, and what plants pay for.
Continuous improvement is the one engineering track where your output is the improvement itself. The path is clear, and plants pay more at each step, if you can show savings with numbers.
The ladder, with what live postings pay
Run kaizen events, 5S and standard work on one area. Learn to measure everything.
Lead DMAIC projects with real savings, coach Green Belts, own a value stream.
Run the plant’s improvement system: the pipeline, the tier meetings, the savings tracking.
Set the system across several plants and report the results to the business.
From 139 Lean / CI postings on the site; pay is the middle posting’s midpoint where at least two list pay.
Do you need a belt?
58 of 139 CI postings mention a Green or Black Belt, and 9 say it’s required. A belt helps you get the interview; a project with a dollar figure gets you the offer. If your plant will sponsor one, take it, and pick a project that matters to the plant manager.
What gets you promoted
- Savings someone else signs off on. Finance-validated numbers beat a slide of kaizen events.
- Results that stick. Standard work, audits and visual management that still run six months later.
- Leaders you’ve coached. At manager level, the job is building the system, not running every event.
