About the role
Position Summary
The Senior Field Quality Engineer, Energy Storage is responsible for the quality, reliability, and safety of deployed battery energy storage system (BESS) assets, independently owning failure analysis and corrective action tracking for issues identified in the field. The role works closely with operations and maintenance teams, which perform routine monitoring and maintenance, and with service engineering, which owns advanced technical escalation, as well as with design, manufacturing, and supplier quality. The position identifies systemic quality issues, conducts structured investigations, drives corrective and preventive actions, and communicates fleet performance through statistical reporting and trend analysis. This is a fully on-site role at 100 Hooper in San Francisco, with semi-regular travel to field sites.
Responsibilities
Serves as the primary point of contact for field-identified quality issues across operating BESS assets
Leads structured investigations into recurring failures, abnormal trends, and field incidents in collaboration with operations and maintenance, service engineering, design, and manufacturing
Performs root cause analyses using established methods such as 5 Whys, fishbone diagrams, and fault tree analysis, supported by clear problem statements, field evidence, and data
Defines, tracks, and verifies corrective and preventive actions, confirming effectiveness through follow-up inspections, audits, and data analysis
Analyzes and reports fleet performance using reliability statistics such as Weibull analysis and Nevada charts to identify failure trends and forecast field returns
Develops and tracks quality metrics such as repeat failure rates, defect trends, and corrective action closure
Drives continuous improvement initiatives that reduce operational burden on operations and maintenance and improve system reliability
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline
5+ years of experience in field quality, reliability engineering, service engineering, or commissioning support for complex electromechanical or energy systems such as BESS, power electronics, renewable energy, or industrial electrical equipment
Experience working safely on high-voltage AC and DC systems, including applicable electrical safety practices
Working knowledge of root cause analysis methods and corrective and preventive action processes
Working knowledge of reliability statistics, including Weibull analysis, Nevada charts, and failure rate trending
Experience working directly with field operations, technicians, and service engineering teams, including field inspection procedures, commissioning documentation, and service records
Valid driver's license and ability to travel up to 25% of the time

About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, on a simple but radical idea: the critical minerals powering the energy transition already exist. They just need to come back. Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. On the energy side, Redwood has deployed the largest second-life battery project in the world, delivering power to AI data centers in months rather than years using proprietary energy architecture engineered entirely in-house. The company is profitable, the market it operates in is projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade, and Redwood is the only company with the supply chain, the technology, and the operational scale to lead it.
