Your game plan for this job
Most people just hit Apply. Do these first and you show up with someone on the inside.
- 1
Find 2–3 people on the Process team at this site
Engineers who joined in the last year or two reply most.
- 2
Send a short, curious note
Ask about the work, not for a referral. We write it for you.
- 3
Have a 15-minute chat
Good questions for this role:
- What does a normal week look like on your team?
- Is the work mostly new product launches or sustaining existing lines?
- How much time do you spend on the floor versus at a desk?
- How did you land the job? What stood out in your interviews?
- 4
Apply, ideally with a referral
Ask if they'd refer you or introduce you to the hiring manager. Send your résumé link and tell them the day you apply.
- 5
Bring proof to the interview
One page of before-and-after numbers from projects you led: scrap, OEE, cycle time, cost. Plant managers hire on results.
About the role
Position Summary
We are seeking a Module Process Engineer to extend Applied Materials’ heterogeneous integration flows into co-packaged optics (CPO). This role will develop and integrate the modules that bring photonic and electronic die, optical engines, and fiber interfaces together, while solving the optical, thermal, and integration challenges unique to CPO. The successful candidate will shape the CPO technology roadmap, work closely with customers and partners on their highest-value problems, and help establish disciplined R&D practices across the team.
Primary
Responsibilities
- ◆Extend heterogeneous integration flows to co-packaged optics (CPO), integrating photonic and electronic die, optical engines, and fiber interfaces.
- ◆Address CPO-specific integration requirements, including optical coupling and alignment, optical loss, and thermal management near photonic components.
- ◆Create technology roadmaps with respect to co-packaged optics (CPO), integration reviews, risk assessments, schedules, and executive-ready reports; communicate clearly with engineers, senior leaders, customers, research partners, and suppliers.
- ◆Identify invention opportunities, contribute to intellectual property, and establish disciplined R&D practices for integration, data quality, documentation, and technical decision-making.
Additional
Responsibilities
- ◆Lead practical application of scientific theory to unusually complex CPO module processes, from development through ongoing technical management.
- ◆Lead research, development, and implementation of new CPO modules and extensions of existing heterogeneous integration capabilities.
- ◆Interact with key customers to resolve unusually complex process and integration issues and address their High Value Problems (HVP).
- ◆Lead alpha engineering activities for CPO process technology and support alpha and beta release of new module capabilities.
- ◆Participate in strategic planning that connects CPO R&D with business unit and Product Business Group plans.
- ◆Identify, select, and work with vendors, suppliers, and ecosystem partners.
Required Qualifications
- ✓MS or PhD in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, or a related field.
- ✓Significant experience as a module process engineer or process integrator in semiconductor R&D or advanced technology development.
- ✓Hands-on experience with co-packaged optics (CPO), silicon photonics, photonic integrated circuits, or optical engines.
- ✓Working knowledge of photonic/electronic die integration, optical coupling and alignment, fiber attach, optical loss, and thermal management near photonic components.
- ✓Experience with heterogeneous integration modules such as hybrid or fusion bonding, D2W/W2W integration, TSVs, fine-pitch interconnects, or interposers.
- ✓Strong DOE, statistical analysis, and root-cause skills across optical, electrical, physical, and reliability data.
- ✓Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary projects and communicate clearly with engineers, executives, customers, and partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- ✓Record of patents, publications, or invited talks in CPO, photonics, or advanced packaging.
- ✓Experience with optical test and characterization of photonic components and packaged modules.
- ✓Prior engagement with customers, research consortia, or suppliers in the CPO ecosystem.
